Especially since this has the potential to be a big travel day, keep an eye on this part of the forecast. Factor in sustained winds that could be in the 10-25 mph range, and it won’t be too nice out there! As far as the showers go, it is tough to know how impactful they will be this far out, but I do think they will have more substance and/or moisture to work off of than what Tuesday or Wednesday could have. Afternoon high temps will slide 5-15° from Friday into Saturday, which will result in many towns and cities to be stuck in the lower 30s. A cold front is going to be scooting itself from the west to the east, which will bring a temperature drop, breezy weather and a few showers. Saturday is when some issues have the potential of developing. Above average temperatures are also within the forecast throughout the week, with the Magic Valley and Mini-Cassia Region in the middle to upper 40s for afternoon highs, while the Wood River Valley can anticipate upper 30s and lower 40s. Overall, if you have any relative last minute shopping or outdoor chores/activities to do this work week before Christmas, the weather shouldn’t give you any issues. The higher terrain areas will be lucky to capture an inch or two worth of snow, while the valley locations are looking at a rain/snow hybrid that will not be much, either. The best chance of showers through Friday is within the Wood River Valley on Tuesday, in which, even then, there won’t be much shower activity going on. While a passing shower or two is within the forecast through Wednesday, there isn’t going to be much precipitation around Southern Idaho throughout the work week. A lack of wind could result in the air quality taking a downward turn, so do your best to reduce idling your car and prevent outdoor burns/fires! This looks to go away once the inversion breaks, in which breezy weather conditions will need to return. The air stagnation advisory continues for Twin Falls, Jerome and Gooding Counties (among others) through 11 PM on Monday evening. LAYNE RABE – MORNING UPDATE - Tuesday, December 19, 2023
